A: It is not required for trainers to be licensed and, like many different professions, there are good and bad trainers. As a consumer, please research thoroughly whom you choose to hire as a personal trainer.
When looking for a good trainer, here is where I suggest starting:
-- Find out whether the trainer is certified by a nationally recognized association. Your trainer should be CPR certified as well as have current CEUs - which means they take nationally recognized classes on a yearly basis. In addition, your trainer should be insured
-- Ask them about the type of clientele they work with and any specializations they may have.
-- Check with your doctor. This is something that you should do before starting any new exercise program (even without a trainer).
