A:  Muscle weighs about twice as much as fat (per equal volume).  Or, put another way, fat takes up twice the space compared to muscle (per equal weight).  If you lose fat, and gain muscle, you may end up gaining weight.  At the same time, you may be thinner and more fit.

There may be other reasons for your increased weight, especially if it occurred rapidly, such as stress, hormones, caloric intake or a change in nutrition.  This is why it is good to discuss your goals in the beginning.  For example, do you want to loss weight or body fat, increase muscle strength or flexibility?

There are different ways  to achieve different goals.
